The Day They Took the Times and the Post

The current contretemps on treason in the MSM reminded me of the following scene in Allen Drury's 1973 novel Come Ninevah, Come Tyre. In the novel (one of two alternate endings to the string of novels beginning with 1959's Advise and Consent), a Soviet dupe has become president of the United States and "bad things" are happening. After initially supporting good liberal President Edward Montoya Jason, the Times, the Post, and columnist Walter Dobius (Walter Lippmann) publish editorials and news stories designed to expose his complicity in murder and treason. Then:

It might have been entitled, had there been a wry historian to record it, "The Day They Took the Times and the Post"; and it posed for many Americans--who did not then have, and would never again have, the opportunity to answer them--many questions:

How would you react, for instance, if you were walking down a street in New York or a street in Washington, and suddenly you saw some sort of disturbance going on at the doors of two distinguished newspapers? Not a big disturbance, you understand, just a minor sort of scuffling, a quick coming and going, a few frightened people, a flurry, a fuss?

Just the sudden arrival at the doors at the same moment in each city, of a couple of police vans . . . the sudden entry into both buildings of small groups of armed and uniformed men . . . a pause of perhaps ten minutes . . . and then the emergence of the uniformed men, hustling along between them a handful of other men, handcuffed or with guns at their backs, obviously angry, terrified, protesting, some dressed in business suits, some with coats off and sleeves rolled up, some, perhaps, crying with a bitter irony, "But this is the Times! Just exactly what would you do, in such a circumstance? Would you shout out frantically to your fellow passers-by, "Help! Help! They're taking the Times! (or the Post!) Help, citizens! Help, freedom lovers! Help, fellow believers in American democracy! They're taking--they're taking--they're taking-the press?"
Would you immediately leap forward, in company with all your fellow citizens, alerted and made knowledgeable by your cry, a great, angry, overwhelming mass, noble and not to be denied, to rescue in savage scuffle, yourselves unarmed against armed and ruthless men, the once arrogant but now wan and horrified souls being dragged off to--who knows what?

Would you, if rescue failed, throw yourselves heroically in front of the vans, the sheer weight of your massed bodies stopping their escaping surge with a sickening and bloody crunch?

Would you cry havoc and let slip the dogs of civil rebellion to save your free press?

Why, no, of course you wouldn't.

In the first place, two thirds of you wouldn't even glance up from your busy scurrying down the streets on your own private affairs.

And of the third of you who did notice, perhaps only a handful would be informed enough and sophisticated enough to have an inkling of what was going on.
And of that handful, half would think, very quickly, Well, it's none of my affair, I'd better get on by just as fast as I can and forget about it, I can't afford to get involved.

And half again would think, Oh dear, they can't do that, but how can I stop them, oh, dear, I might get hurt, I guess I'd better not try to do anything, oh, dear.

And of the three or four left, perhaps one or two of you might half start forward--and then as abruptly stop, appalled by the unbelievable occasion, paralyzed by the knowledge of your own unarmed vulnerability, aware that you were almost entirely alone, aware that you might very well be instantly shot down. . . .

Democratic Torture?

A constitutional democracy that practices torture is an oxymoron.

Surely one could imagine a national constitution that permitted torture as well as a democratic majority that approved of it so it can't be an oxymoron. Andrew Sullivan may be trying to say that torture violates natural rights/natural law but is uncomfortable with the baggage attached to those concepts.

CATO Institute Advocates State Licensure!

Dale Carpenter has a new CATO paper out opposing the Federal Marriage Amendment.

In it he discusses various legal and constitutional issues involving the FMA but he doesn't analyze it from a libertarian perspective. Peculiar for a libertarian writing for a libertarian think tank.

The FMA would seem to prevent states from licensing same sex marriages (SSM). Isn't the prevention or elimination or government licensing generally the libertarian position?

It sounds to me like the FMA is promoting the libertarian position on Dom Rel law. It prevents the states from regulating SSM. SSM's can still be established by the parties. All they have to do is find a church or jump a broomstick.

Now all libertarians have to do is find out a way to prevent state regulation of OSM and the rest of us can be freed from state oppression.

Return Dom Rel law to private institutions like the Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, the Coven, etc.

Here's an "inside baseball" question to Dale and other libertarians who support state licensure of SSM:

Suppose that I'm a massage therapist in a state that does not license massage therapy. I organize a group of my fellows to petition the state to license massage therapists. We are seeking to increase the professionalism of massage therapy and restrict entry so that we can increase our incomes (in other words gain all the benefits that the other licensed professions have.

So what would be the libertarian position on this proposal? Do libertarians generally support or oppose the extension of licensure to new professions? Or do they favor ending the licensure of existing licensed professions? Isn't the answer obvious?

How is the licensing of private sexual unions different from the licensing of professions (save that such licensure would seem to be much more invasive of personal life)?

I know. Without state licensure of sexual congress you can't receive the 1001 benefits.

If immigation of Mexican hordes will lead to a tax revolt, it sounds like a great idea. Somehow, however, I doubt it. I would guess that it will lead to higher taxes (like everything else).

Republicans with Gay Children

Suppose that a libertarian anarchist has a child who takes a job with the IRS. Is there any requirement in libertarian theory that he remain close to or distant from this child? Is there any requirement in libertarian theory that he change his views on the morality of taxation because of the choice made by his child? If a child becomes a Democract, does that require his parents to start voting for Democrats?

I didn't think so.

What's so hard to understand? One is not required to change one's views because of something one's child does.

I would also guess that Mary and Heather retain a few legal rights. The Supremes said they can fornicate and lewdly cohabit. They can vote, hold public office, make contracts, etc. You can't shoot them without justificaion.

Don't credit anyone who claims someone has been deprived of all legal rights. We've never practiced outlawry.

Note the same overblown rhetoric in immigration discussions. Illegal aliens retain plenty of rights in America.

W.H. Auden 1, "The Pristine Words Only Academy" 0:

Jacob Behymer-Smith is a ninth-grader at the Coral Academy of Science, a public charter school in Nevada. He's participating in the Poetry Out Loud contest, which is run by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, and in which high school students compete at reciting a great poem that they've memorized. Behymer-Smith chose W.H. Auden's The More Loving One; so far, he's progressed from his school competition to a district-wide competition, in which he placed first. On April 22, he'll be competing in the Nevada statewide competition. You'd think that the Coral Academy's officials would be happy for him, and would be trying to support him.

You'd be mistaken, because -- horror of horrors -- Auden's poem, it turns out, contains unspeakable vulgarities. To be precise, it contains the words "hell" ("Looking up at the stars, I know quite well / That, for all they care, I can go to hell") and "damn" ("Admirer as I think I am / Of stars that do not give a damn"). That, the Dean of Students at the Coral Academy opined, is "inappropriate language," as opposed to the "pristine language" (her words) that she thinks ought to be presented to the school's students.

And because of this, the school insisted on April 7, Jacob couldn't perform his poem.

Since almost all literature published since 1922 (the same date the Copyright Act is currently locked on) is garbage anyway, and since we have more lit than anyone could read in a lifetime available for free, it would be no loss if one read nothing published after 1921.

Applying for an SS card in 1968

In the '60s, most Americans who got SS cards did so for one of two reasons --  they were entering the work force or taking the SAT test.

Not being an early member of the work force, I had no SSN in 1968 and got one so I could take the SAT.

It was a relatively simple process.  My mom drove me down to Richards Street (?) in downtown Honolulu to the SS office.  I had my birth certificate with me.  The birth certificate was to establish birth date and, hence, age.  Identity was not an issue.  The process resembles the application for a Taxpayer ID Number (TIN) for a business, trust, or estate today.  The number was merely designed to distinguish one taxpayer from another.

The SS office was right off the street with no security of course.  No security in those days.  I walked in, filled out a short form at a stand-up table.  This was the same basic form used since the program's origins in 1936: Name, Address, Employer, DOB, Place of Birth, Parent's Names. 

I handed my SS-5 form and birth certificate to a clerk seated at a desk with a typewriter -- minimal or no barrier.  She rolled a strip of SS cards into her typewriter and typed my name in the blank, tore it off, and handed it to me for my signature.  Although I don't remember, she would also have used a mechanical  number stamp to put the number on my SS-5 form to make sure that it was connected to the right number.

Like all SS cards of that era, it read: For Social Security and Tax Purposes--Not for Identification.

Let's look at the theatrical films on the Arab-Israeli conflict in the last 40 years:

The first film is pro-Israel, the last two are anti-Israel. That's not very many films for such an inherently photogenic topic. One wonders why.

Critics of the contemporary cinema (or to identify it properly, the contemporary left-wing cinema) are merely suggesting that its prejudices should be highlighted as an analytical tool. Since Hollyweird obviously seeks the deconstruction of the US and Western Civilization and its replacement with Godess knows what, it is perfectly appropriate to point out the race, gender, affectional preference, and religio-philisophical backstory of film production.

What's sauce for feminist and queer theorists is sauce for the gander.

I'm shopping this screenplay about a world-girding conspiracy of the MLA, MESA, and the Screen Actors Guild to destabilize American society so that it can fall like an overripe fruit into the hands of its enemies. I think there is some evidence. One of the main reasons for resuming the Iraqi war was never mentioned by the Administration (strategic benefit).

After Afghanistan was liberated -- arguably a pure just war as testified to by the presence of Canadian and German troops (after the victory) -- the Admin had to decide what to do next.

It discovered a very convenient target. A nation we were still at war with since the 1991 cease fire, a nation where we had aircraft in the air and advisors on the ground in the North. The continuation of the war was proved by Iraqi threats to our aircraft every few weeks (targeting radar) and US & British destruction of their radar sites every few weeks.

The fact that our war with Iraq had started with the approval of everyone except Jordan and the PLO, was another sweetener. Since the war was already on, and since Gulf War I easily met just war principals, that sort of analysis was minimized. Combined with geography -- a country whose control would isolate both Iran (surrounded except for Russia) and Syria. Split the Middle East, allow us to remove troops from Saudi Arabia and offer the possibility of a more democratic regime...

Note the fact that we didn't even have to meaningfully invade Iraq's sovereignty since we had already impaired it (with full UN approval) via Kurdistan and no-fly zones.

Lots of arguments in favor. Most of those arguments could not be made because they would prove too revealing.

Where is Laura Z. Hobson now we need her. Here is the NYT promoting a travel real estate deal restricted to Muslims -- located in a city that has banned non-Muslims since it was founded. I wonder what the Public Editor will have to say?

Perhaps the Times has gone libertarian on us and come to oppose the 1964 Civil Rights Act's public accommodation discrimination ban. Or maybe it thinks that creed discrimination by an international hotel chain is the same as creed discrimination in a church or church school. If so, it should tell us and say that Gentleman's Agreement, which also attacked creed discrimination in the lodging industry featured bad social policy ideas. We'd like to know.

Peace At Last

If Peace can be described as that period of time during which no one beyond the families of the fallen pays any attention to military casualties, then Katrina has brought America Peace.

Race and Risk

Some have said that race played a role in the risk of death from Katrina. In fact, it is too early to tell which way the odds will break. We currently have no idea how many are dead much less the racial composition of the dead compared to the racial composition of the affected parishes/counties.

It's possible that the white death rate was higher than the black death rate. We'll see. I expect the total deaths will be lower than many current guesses.

One thing we do know is that sex, age, income, race, ethnicity, and religion played a significant role in deaths on 9/11. Male, young, affluent, white, Irish & Italian, Catholics were disproportionately represented among the dead because of the demographics of both the financial services industry and the various fire and police departments.

Given the firms for whom many of those in the World Trade Center worked (as well as the large number of fire fighters and other rescue workers) the other demographic facts should not be that surprising. The victims were overwhelmingly male (about 75 percent), young (many under 40, most under 50), and white (about 75 percent). Only about eight percent were black, nine percent Hispanic, and about six percent Asian. About 75 percent were born in the United States; the rest came from many countries. Together New York and New Jersey accounted for about 87 percent.

We now know that the Upper East Side had the most losses (44), while Hoboken, NJ had the highest proportion of loss of any area, losing 39 residents, or about one per thousand. The number is probably even higher if parental addresses are taken into account. It is not surprising that many of the victims lived in very affluent parts of the metropolitan area, including the Upper East Side and Basking Ridge New Jersey.

I wonder why none of those communities complained?

We have numerous libertarians supporting state licensure of same-sex marriage instead of advocating an end to state licensure of opposite-sex marriage which I always assumed was the libertarian position.

Just as modern production techniques produce more goods for less labor than primitive pre-specialization and pre-trade economies, the adoption of an ideology saves the individual time and effort and allows one to have answers readily at hand even for questions one has never before encountered. The answers may not be perfect, but they'll be fast and "good enough" (if one's ideology or theology is good enough). There do continue to be problems "at the margins" but one is able to vastly reduce the amount of work one has to do.

In the very exciting New Jersey section of the Sunday New York Times, the article Go to the Mattresses (No, It's Not a Mob War), contributed to the Times' reputation for not knowing much about weapons.

The article is about multi-player, multi-day e-gaming tournaments conducted over LANs. The error occurs in this quoted exchange:

If the office IT guys ever threw a rave, it would probably look something like this.

Obviously, the phrase: "Spray and prey, spray and prey" should have read "Spray and pray, spray and pray" which refers to a technique for shooting automatic weapons in which a shooter cuts loose in a wildly uncontrolled fashion and prays that he'll hit something. This is in contrast to aimed fire.

Teaching Good Morals

Latest Expatriate Lists

The IRS (and I) have finally updated the lists of Americans Renouncing Citizenship.

This quarterly exercise in list making -- which consists merely of the names of US citizens who have renounced their citizenship -- has been published in the Federal Register since the end of 1996. A total of 5483 names have appeared on the lists since that year and the numbers are up to just over 600 a year.

As I've followed the lists, I've noticed that the largest group seems to be Koreans who want to return to Korea (now that it's rich) and want to be able to own land and corporations -- something that "foreigners" are restricted from doing.

In fact, even though the list was meant to be used to highlight and target "taxpatriates" -- native-born US citizens who renounce to save taxes -- most of the expatriates seem to be foreigners who have limited contacts with the US (other than citizenship) and don't want to be caught up in the US' unusual world-wide taxation regime.

Violent Attacks on Medical Facilities Advocated

When abortion clinic shooters or bombers do it, the Left opposes such attacks. But when minors who may or may not by gay are involved, some have no problem "interfering with child custody".

I've been blocking out of my mind the reality that there are places out there like public schools, abortion clinics, hempfests, Million Mom Marches, plastic surgeons, rock concerts, the Democratic Party, UU churches, graduation trips to Aruba, Brown University, etc. and that parents send their kids to these places. But much as I'm tempted, I don't send private special forces squads in to break them out. I figure that I can't do anything about the poor parental choices of others.

Why not desecrate the Koran rather than the Qur'an?

If one wants to safely desecrate the Koran, one can use an english translation since the Koran is only holy if in Arabic.

My Ass Opens Doors

What, exactly, is an Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Card?

It's a bearer instrument.

Access to my office is controlled by RFID readers.  All doors including the rarely used fire escape entrances unlock when touched by an appropriate RFID card.  Various interior doors are also controlled in this fashion.

The RFID readers are flat panels with an LED mounted 42" off the floor to accommodate the dwarves that work (or may work) in the building.

At 6' 4", my "rear" pants pocket is about 42" high.  I carry an RFID card in a leather ID case in that pocket.  To enter the building, I present my rear and the door unlocks.  The RFID card never leaves its leather case or my pocket.

The card will open the doors for anyone who presents it.  That makes it a bearer instrument in this application.

In practice of course, most photo IDs are bearer instruments since most ID checkers are not very dedicated document examiners.

I'm reviewing a PJ building list and what do I see: Rehovoth Nuclear Plant

The Koffler Accelerator - 14 UD Pelletr on by NEC- started operating in 1976 and since then it is the major facility of the lab. The laboratory is a unit in the Department of Physics Services headed by Prof. Michael Hass. It is providing ion-beam services to several scientific departments of the Weizmann Institute, to other research institutes in the country and collaborates with scientists from other countries.

There is a tendency in the modern era to disguise nuclear reactors by referring to them as other things "Japan's largest power plant of its type" in the Sunday Morning GE TV commercial or "particle accelerator" as here. But where do the particles come from? I assume there's a small reactor inside.

Tax Free Telecoms

So I got my first regular bill for my Verizon EVDO high speed wireless broadband service and I noticed something missing - taxes. Verizon charges $79.99 a month for their high speed data service and I just got a PC card with no voice plan.

So no voice plan meant no telephone taxes and New York had removed sales taxes from monthly ISP service fees way back in the CompuServe era. (That was a funny experience. In the '80s ISP connections were tax free in New York, then they started charging sales taxes as soon as the state noticed ISPs existed, then they decided to remove the taxes because the ISPs pointed out that customers could just sign up out of state.)

Anyway, my bill was $79.99 + a 5 cent fee from Verizon for a total of $80.04. (I have to ask Verizon what the nickel is for.)

I hope it's a while before NYS finds out I'm making VOIP phone calls with my service.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Americans will need passports to re-enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, Panama and Bermuda by 2008, part of a tightening of U.S. border controls in an era of terrorist threat, three administration officials said Tuesday.

Not precisely correct since if you are a US citizen they have to take you with or without a passport. When traveling from overseas, the carriers won' t you board without a passport (because of fear of having to ship you back for free if not admitted) but since you can walk or drive from Canada, there's no one to stop you before you hit the border and the border guards can only slow you up not bar you forever.

Why is it that those who are not licensed crips can be fined for parking in a gimp slot (whether they are actually handicapped or not) but anyone (half or whole) can use a handicap stall in a public convenience without fear or favor?

Helpful Hints for First-Time Ethernet Installers

The one thing that the helpful hints on home networking didn't tell me (because it was too obvious) is that you can't just connect a Cat5 Cable between two machines. Like the old days of Serial /Null Modem Cables, you have to flip the signals or they won't work. That means a Crossover Cable to connect two machines or (more usually) an Ethernet Hub or Switch between or among them.

You can't believe how long it took for me to figure this out before Annoyances.org told me.

In a rare Hollywood event, Julia Roberts and Daniel Moder produced twins who were not only born within a lawful marriage but were (even rarer) actually conceived within a lawful marriage.

This blessed event, and a great article in the Washington Post on unfortunate celebrity baby names, led me to wonder who was the first CBB?

Now we're not talking about the bastard children of ordinary civilians or the famous bastards of the past. Before one can have a CBB, one has to have celebrities (in the modern sense) which means one has to have mass PopCult to produce them. So we have to have movies, radio, TV, etc. We also need a "moral retrenchment" that encourages the famous to produce bastards. Both of these requirements mean that we have to seek the first CBB after WWII.

The answer turns out to be an easy one (for those mature enough to remember the incident) , but the first Celebrity Bastard Baby wasn't one baby, they were twins. Here they are today (with their older sister Pia and younger brother Roberto).

It included the Democratic Party's own campaign workers, plus labor union members and other nominally independent groups called 527s (named for the portion of the federal tax code they are organized under). One of the largest of these groups was America Coming Together, which organized thousands of paid workers to register voters and knock on doors. ACT, which was started with seed money from billionaire George Soros, spent more money in Ohio than any other state, according to campaign finance records.

I guess these capitalists just can't match the power of the voluntary sector.

Southern State?

Andrew Sullivan quotes the AP:

The 10 Southern states with some of the highest divorce rates were Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, ...

Since when was Arizona a "Southern" state?

Tax Cuts are not Payments

When discussing Alan Keyes' proposal to cut taxes for the descendants of
slaves or general proposals to reduce taxes, lefties have a tendency to
think of these tax cuts as a payment

Cutting the taxes of a group (descendants of slaves) is not a payment to
them but the forbearance of an exaction from them.

Since taxes are coercive and the ideal would be the elimination of all
taxes (all coercion) for everyone (though the ideal may not be
possible), any reduction of taxes on any basis should be a good thing as
it brings the polity closer to the ideal state.

Tactically, of course, it would also anger non-included groups and might
cause them to support broader tax cuts for everyone. At worst, such
feelings would merely result in a reversal of the slave descendant tax cut.

I realize that the clause "the ideal would be the elimination of all
taxes" obviously rings true to libertarians but it should logically be
true for all men save those who believe in the value of coercion for its
own sake (an inhumane position).

You Too Can Commit 'Mail Fraud'

The Daschle Campaign has claimed that the South Dakota Republican Party is responsible for an attack mailing because:

"We believe well over 1,000 churches have received this mailing, so the idea that a couple of college kids in their dorm rooms did this is incredibly absurd," Pfeiffer said. The complaint charges that students used the state Republican Party's resources to get out the message.

So I fired up BigYellow.com and entered the category "Churches" and selected the state "South Dakota" and immediatetly had 2233 hits. You can too by clicking here. Then it's a simple matter of cutting and pasting the entries a page at a time into Excel, firing up a few macros to unpack the addresses into a a flat database file, and running it through mailmerge in Word to print the envelopes. Less than one day's work for one person.

The Dems should really try and keep up on 1980's office technology. It's hurt them a few times in this campaign.

Oathbreaker for President

Eugene Volokh does his usually masterful job determining whether Article 3 of the 14th Amendmet could bar John Forbes Kerry from becoming president. The relevent part of the 14th Amendment says:

No person shall ... hold any office ... under the United States ... who, having previously taken an oath, as ... an officer of the United States, ... to
support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in
insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the
enemies thereof.

Professor Volokh concludes:

If Kerry's purpose was not to help the North Vietnamese, but to help the United
States or to help maintain U.S. compliance with its own laws and policies
related to military conduct, then he's not covered. And I have no reason to
think that Kerry's purpose was indeed anything other than to help the United
States, whether or not his actions in pursuit of that purpose may have been
misguided or excessive.

That may settle the issue of how a court is likely to decide an Article 3 suit brought against Kerry (and if he wins, one will surely be brought since I think any "US person" would have standing) but it does leave undiscussed the other issues involving the oath Kerry took when he became an Officer of the United States.

He took the traditional oath which reads:

I, John Forbes Kerry, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies forign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Neither is their Matrimony Lawful

A few months ago, Jonathan Rauch appeared on Michael Medved's show to discuss his book Gay Marriage. In the course of a reasonably friendly conversation, Rauch quoted the famous opening lines of the The Form of Solemnization of Matrimony from the Book of Common Prayer (BCP):

DEARLY beloved, we are gathered together here in the sight of God, and in the face of this congregation, to join together this Man and this Woman in holy Matrimony;

This was a version of the sentimental argument in favor of Same Sex Marriage (SSM). You've seen all the pairs of brides in white, the tuxes, the flowers, etc. More of an emotional (if one's emotions work that way) than a logical augment in favor of SSM.

Rauch stopped reading the formulary with the word 'Matrimony' because rest of the ceremony is not very supportive of SSM.

For the benefit of those Mods who're completely unfamiliar with the Western concept of marriage that existed for 2,000 years or so, here's the complete formulary from the 1662 BCP which is still one of the official (by Act of Parliament) liturgies of the Church of England [emphasis added].

DEARLY beloved, we are gathered together here in the sight of God, and in the face of this congregation, to join together this Man and this Woman in holy Matrimony; which is an honourable estate, instituted of God in the time of man's innocency, signifying unto us the mystical union that is betwixt Christ and his Church; which holy estate Christ adorned and beautified with his presence, and first miracle that he wrought, in Cana of Galilee; and is commended of Saint Paul to be honourable among all men: and therefore is not by any to be enterprised, nor taken in hand, unadvisedly, lightly, or wantonly, to satisfy men's carnal lusts and appetites, like brute beasts that have no understanding; but reverently, discreetly, advisedly, soberly, and in the fear of God; duly considering the causes for which Matrimony was ordained.

First, It was ordained for the procreation of children, to be brought up in the fear and nurture of the Lord, and to the praise of his holy Name.

Secondly, It was ordained for a remedy against sin, and to avoid fornication; that such persons as have not the gift of continency might marry, and keep themselves undefiled members of Christ's body.

Thirdly, It was ordained for the mutual society, help, and comfort, that the one ought to have of the other, both in prosperity and adversity. Into which holy estate these two persons present come now to be joined. Therefore if any man can shew any just cause, why they may not lawfully be joined together, let him now speak, or else hereafter for ever hold his peace.

I REQUIRE and charge you both, as ye will answer at the dreadful day of judgement when the secrets of all hearts shall be disclosed, that if either of you know any impediment, why ye may not be lawfully joined together in Matrimony, ye do now confess it. For be ye well assured, that so many as are coupled together otherwise than God's Word doth allow are not joined together by God; neither is their Matrimony lawful.

Now this ceremony may not speak to the peculiar tastes of Mods but it does tell us a great deal about the traditional understanding of marriage and its use has been a bit more widespread than the Apache Wedding Prayer.

The BCP wedding service has been controversial for quite a few years. Here is an excerpt from Busman's Honeymoon by Dorothy L. Sayers (1937) in which Lord Peter Whimsey and Miss Harriet Vane are engaged to be married and are fighting over the details of the service with his sister-in-law Helen. As his mother (the Dowager Dutchess of Denver) records in a letter:

16 SEPTEMBER Helen obligingly presented us with a copy of the new form of marriage service, with all the vulgar bits left out--which was asking for trouble. Peter very funny about it--said he knew all about the "procreation of children" in theory though not in practice, but that the "increase of mankind" by any other method sounded too advanced for him, and that, if he ever did indulge in such dangerous amusements, he would, with his wife's permission, stick to the old-fashioned procedure. He also said that as for the "gift of continency," he wouldn't have it as a gift, and had no objection to admitting as much. At this point, Helen got up and left the house, leaving P. and Harriet to wrangle over the word "obey." P. said he would consider it a breach of manners to give orders to his wife, but H. said, Oh, no--he'd give orders fast enough if the place was on fire or a tree falling down and he wanted her to stand clear. P. said, in that case they ought both to say "obey," but it would be too much jam for the reporters. Left them to fight it out. When I came back, found Peter had consented to be obeyed on condition he might "endow" and not"share" his worldly goods. Shocking victory of sentiment over principle.

Tora Bora

John Forbes Kerry has mentioned Tora Bora and Osama frequently implying that not capturing Osama represents a major tactical and strategic failure.  His knowledge of geography and war seems a bit limited:

• You can never guarantee the capture and killing of a given man.
• We still don't know exactly where Osama was in November 2001.  Tora Bora, Pakistan, Iran, somewhere else in Afghanistan.
  
• No one has or had enough troops to "surround" everywhere OBL could have been in the northeast mountains of Afghanistan (if he was there).
• Even if OBL was up against the Pakistan border, he was not surrounded.  The Pakistan border was right there and on the other side was Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province which is not under the control of the central government.  See bottom of this map.  He could have crossed at any time.
• The US would have had to invade Pakistan to "surround" OBL.  They would have destroyed the current government there.
  
• OBL may be dead.  So Bush's strategy may have worked.
• Here's a free sound bite for the Administration:  "Osama bin Laden was never trapped in Tora Bora because he could escape at any time into the ungoverned Northwest Frontier Province of Pakistan.  Pakistan couldn't stop him and we couldn't have stopped him without invading Pakistan which is completely against US policy."

Reach Exceeds Grasp

From Monday's New York Times:

Congress Close to Establishing Rules for Driver's Licenses

The Senate version of the intelligence bill includes an amendment, passed by
unanimous consent on Oct. 1, that would let the secretary of homeland security
decide what documents a state would have to require before issuing a driver's
license, and would also specify the data that the license would have to include
for it to meet federal standards. The secretary could require the license to
include fingerprints or eye prints. The provision would allow the Homeland
Security Department to require use of the license, or an equivalent card issued
by motor vehicle bureaus to nondrivers for identification purposes, for access to
planes, trains and other modes of transportation.

As one of the characters in Robert Heinlein's novel Have Spacesuit Will Travel remarked, "The government can't even require a man to be able to read and write."

Domestic driver's licenses and non-driver ID cards are only available to US residents. So these requirements could only apply to US residents. Four million native born US citizens are not US residents and thus not eligible for these cards. Additionally, 5.5 billion other people are non-US citizens and non-US residents and thus ineligible for US domestic driver's licenses and non-driver ID cards so they won't have to use them either. Which means that US transportation systems will continue to be open to those with other sort of documents (usually passports).

Safe World?

The first question of the 3rd Presidential Debate:

SCHIEFFER: Gentleman, welcome to you both.

By coin toss, the first question goes to Senator Kerry.

Senator, I want to set the stage for this discussion by asking the question
that I think hangs over all of our politics today and is probably on the minds
of many people watching this debate tonight.

And that is, will our children and grandchildren ever live in a world as
safe and secure as the world in which we grew up?

What world was that? The world of WWI; the Great Depression; WWII; The Cold War (WWIII); the '60's (riots, assassinations, aircraft hijackings, invasions, Vietnam); the '70's (Nixon, Carter, social decay); the '80's (last gasp of WWIII combined with the first shots of WWIV). And don't mention the '90's or the '00's!

As an early baby boomer, I could always blame my birth cohort's peculiarities by saying, "What do you expect, we spent our entire childhood 30 minutes away from nuclear annihilation?"

It strikes me that most of those living grew up in insecure times.

Mary's Choice

Andrew Sullivan writes on Kerry and Mary:

All Kerry did was invoke the veep's daughter to point out that obviously homosexuality isn't a choice, in any meaningful sense.

I'm not sure how Ms. Cheney's sexual preference proves that homosexuality is immutable.  Just because one's child grows up to become a communist, a Demoncat, or a golfer; one can't automatically blame a genetic root.  Obviously homosexual behavior can't be strongly genetic since all of Mary Cheney's ancestors (and all of Andrew Sullivan's ancestors) were at least functionally heterosexual.

The Road to Whipsnade

Today is the 73rd anniversary of C. S. Lewis' conversion to Christianity:

On September 28, 1931, at age thirty-two, Lewis was "riding to the Whipsnade zoo in the sidecar of Warren’s motorcycle. ‘When we set out I did not believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and when we reached the zoo I did.’" According to 1 John 5:1 and 5, all those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God are "born of God." To Arthur Greeves on October 1, 1931, Lewis wrote: "I have just passed from believing in God to definitely believing in Christ-in Christianity."

Lewis had been an atheist for many years until 1929 when he converted to Theism and then after a few years and some chats with J. R. R. Tolkien and other members of The Inklings, he made the final step aboard his brother's motorbike.

The Whipsnade Zoo is now the Whipsnade Wild Animal Park.

He later became the greatest Christian Apologist of the 20th Century and died the same day as John F. Kennedy and Aldous Huxley.
